Bitter Campari, Milano, Cappiello, 1912

A man swings from a lamp post for a glass of bitter.

What

Cappiello's 1912 poster for Bitter Campari of Milan, printed by Vercasson & Cie, 43 rue de Lancry, Paris.

Why

Nine years before the 1921 Campari already on this wall, Cappiello drew a red-haired reveller clinging to a street lamp.

Notice

The lamp glows yellow against a pale sky, and the arm thrown out to the right points straight at the word CAMPARI.

“The house already holds the 1921 Campari. This is the earlier hand, looser and stranger.”
