Griesedieck Bros. Brewing Company, St. Louis, c. 1911

Anheuser-Busch's biggest local rival — and it still lost.

What

A brewery advertising print for the Griesedieck Bros. Brewing Company of St. Louis, a leading local rival to Anheuser-Busch in the pre-Prohibition era.

Why

Weakened by Anheuser-Busch's post-Repeal budget brands, Griesedieck Bros. sold to Falstaff Brewing in 1957; the brand was discontinued around 1960 and the plant closed in 1977.

Notice

A house big enough to fight the giant in its own city — the scale of what St. Louis brewing once was.

“It outlived Prohibition and still lost, slowly, to the brewery across town.”

Griesedieck Bros. Brewing Company was gone from the market. Everything sold here is the art, not the drink.
