F. Klemm's Bock, Baltimore, 1880

Bock season, chromolithographed at a resolution the brewery never saw.

What

An 1880 chromolithographed bock-beer advertisement for the Baltimore brewer F. Klemm, digitized at very high resolution by the Library of Congress.

Why

Klemm's was one of the many small German-American Baltimore breweries of the 1870s–80s that vanished; the city's brewing trade was ended entirely by National Prohibition in 1920.

Notice

The bock goat rendered in full chromolithographic bloom — this is the seasonal advertising vocabulary at its 1880s peak.

“A small house, gone without a trace but this sheet.”
