Ambassadeurs, L'Avaleur de Sabres, Chéret, 1876

A sword swallower takes the blade at the café-concert.

What

Jules Chéret's poster for the sword swallower at the Café-Concert des Ambassadeurs, Champs-Élysées, printed at Chéret's own press in 1876; the BnF sheet measures 80 by 60 cm; Broido 186.

Why

The Ambassadeurs mixed singers with circus turns, and the sword swallower was billed in letters as big as his blade.

Notice

He wears a scale shirt and a red kilt, one sword in his mouth and another in his hand.

“An evening out on the Champs-Élysées, from sword to song.”
