Tournée du Chat Noir, Steinlen, 1896

The black cat, haloed, sits on the red banner.

What

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen's poster for the touring company of the Chat Noir with Rodolphe Salis, printed by Charles Verneau in Paris in 1896.

Why

The Chat Noir was Salis's cabaret in Montmartre, and in 1896 its show went on the road.

Notice

The cat stares out under a saint's halo, and the name RODOLPHE SALIS runs across the red cloth in black.

“The most famous cat in Paris, sent on tour.”
