Flora Temple, Schiedam Gin, Besson & Van Syckel, 1860

A champion trotter on a gin label.

What

A label for Schiedam gin imported by Besson & Van Syckel of New York, deposited for copyright in the Southern District of New York on May 11, 1860; Library of Congress, LCCN 2003680516.

Why

Flora Temple was the most famous trotting mare in America, and the importers borrowed her fame for their gin.

Notice

The mare runs in grey at the centre, and the importers' name curves around her in red letters.

“Dutch gin, sold in New York under an American horse.”
